Four Tips for Gymnastics Grips Care

By John Cox

Essential to gymnastics are grips. Level 4 is usually when most gymnasts start using grips.

Protection and holding power are provided by grips. To keep grips in good working condition you must know how to care for them.

Caring for your gymnastics grips can be done in four steps

#1 Wear and tear inspection

Gymnastics grips can become a safety hazard with weak points or small tears. Before use, inspect your grips

and after each practice, closely examining possible tears in the leather or weak points around the wrist, buckle, or strap. Soft leather that

is comfortable should not be construed as weak. Leather is meant to become soft in order to fit your hand and wrap around the bar. But if the

continue to grow. We recommend discarding gymnastics grips at the sign of any tear of any size on any part of the grip. It's always better to error in the name of safety.

#2 Wrap them for a nap

New gymnastics grips should be wrapped up for 24 hours before use. Simply roll the leather around the dowel starting with the finger tip edge first.

You're essentially wrapping the grips around themselves and then securing them with a rubber band or piece of string. This will break the

hard leather down making the grips flexible. Flexible leather conforms nicely to the human hand. This process should be repeated until the grips

feel comfortable and sit against the palm at rest. This process can be stopped once the leather is broken in. One to two weeks of wrapping should do the trick.

#3 Brush them

Gymnastics grips can collect excess chalk building up after each practice session. Leather can become compacted with chalk due to the high amount of

pressure between the bar and grips. You don't want leather to become stiff with chalk build up. Excess chalk can be removed by brushing it off.

Gymnasts mostly use a grip brush with semi rigid bristles similar to a dog brush. If you don't have a grip brush, and

if you take your time a stiff tooth brush would work. A brush could cut or damage the stitching so it's important to stay away rendering

unsafe grips. The length of the grips should be used to brush back and forth.

#4 Keep in safe storage

It's important to protect gymnastics grips when not in use. To keep grips from getting ruined in transport, store grips in a separate bag. Any

weak leather can result from a spill of soda or water on the grips. It's better to keep any doubts from entering. Don't forget,

grips are full of chalk and a storage bag will keep your other clothing and equipment free of chalk dust. Another benefit of separate storage is reducing the scent of sweat from absorbing into other items in your backpack or locker.

In conclusion, follwoing these 4 tips will ensure you have a quality pair of gymnastics grips available when you need them.
